Revisiting an old friend

Post by sclitheroe » Sat Oct 19, 2019 4:30 pm

There's been, it seems to me, a little tiny bit of a resurgence in interest in the FBM-1 (imagine what a demo like this would have done for sales back in the day: https://youtu.be/Le4unNKcGDI), so when I found one used for $100 in "very good" condition, I figured I'd revisit the pedal. I think I sent my original along during a pedal exchange, so it was nice to have one again to complement the FRV-1. I got a fair bit of use out of my original when I used solid state amps (starting with a JC-55 and later a JC-120)

Regardless, imagine my surprise when it arrived in the original box, even in the original plastic bag inside the box! There's a little tiny mark on the treadle that I'm guessing was where a price tag sat attached for years, but otherwise the thing is _mint_, including the box.

Going to give it a shot going into..my '59 Bassman :D

Yeah ! I still have some CD and catalogs too. Cool memories... it was a CD gift from my music shop in late 2003. I also have a catalog from 2011 in my FB-2 box.

That's kind of what I wanted to double-check haha. Having both the English and French catalogs in a pedal box is very "Québécois" (C'est la loi ici!), so I even wondered if you weren't from my corner of the globe. Are these two also included in pedals in France or is the English one from a foreign purchase (just curious).

Late to the party but here it goes: I always wondered how these sounded and how useful they really were. I'm not being judgemental here: I'm being ignorant and desiring to be educated.

What kind of use are you making of them? Are they just basically for tone coloration or do they serve a purpose I do not understand? Are they just cool reverbs? Are they even reverbs at all? What exactly are they?

My son found a FBM-1 this summer and he's very happy with it.

They are overdrives in the style/tone of the amps they claim to be. Go watch the youtube vid I posted a link to for a great demo of the FBM-1. Those same guys also reviewed the FRV-1 (which I also have, and adore), as well as the FDR-1 (which I kinda want now to complete my collection of this series)

It's actually better than I remember. It's not a bad OD at all for low gain stuff.

Prices here in Japan have doubled since their demise, certainly over $120 per item.
